Toyota RAV4 PHEV granny plug charging problems

When my RAV4 was delivered it came with 2 chargine cables –

– A “standard” type-2 cable

– A 3 pin UK household cable with a type-2 to plug into the cars charging port.

The “standard” cable can charge the call from empty to full in approx. 2.5 hours, the 3-pin (“granny”) one takes around 6 hours from empty to full.

I use the type-2 at any public charger, and the granny plug at home, where I usually charge it over night, so 6 hours is perfectly ok.

But the other day I started having problems – the orange light turned on but when I plugged the other end into the car the light came on for a second, and then turned off, multiple times. No charging started.  This was at around freezing point (0degrees celsius) – and raining.

I put the cable into the car (just in case it had gotten wet) and tryied again the next day, same problem. Using a public charger and the type-2 cable worked as it should.

But then I took the car inside inside to heat up and dry out – and the next day it worked as it should.
