This is not in any of the documentation - but if you want to set up the O2 wireless ADSL router that they supply with all new ADSL subscriptions then you need to navigate to it's administration pages by going to http://192.168.0.254 with your browser (make sure your Mac has a IP address in the 192.168.1.x range) - this should bring up the following screen

The choose : Setup

Make sure you have the setup information that O2 sent you prior to shipping the box, and key in this information.

Btw. if you choose to use the wireless interface to do this - then the password is on the inside of the CD cover...

The O2 ADSL wireless router comes set up as default in quite a misleading way.

The "Admin" user is not the same as a "Superuser", as a matter of fact you have to log in as the following user to get full access to the box :

Username: SuperUser
Password: O2Br0ad64nd

This user can only log in from the LAN side of the box btw. and can log in using telnet. This will give you full access right to the box, and you can now turn on things like SNMP monitoring etc.

As my wife's superb black MacBook is one of the early ones, it does not support the newer wireless standard (802.11N - or Wireless-N among friends), and as we have a new Airport Extreme router this is a bit of a shame, as her backups take longer, and also slow down the whole wireless network.

So after looking at alternatives that do not involve taking the MacBook apart I went out and bought a D-Link DWA-140 USB stick that supports the correct standards, and that apparently had a OsX driver.

I started off by downloading the driver from the D-Link site - but got nowhere with it, so I went to the Railink site (the manufacturers of the stick) and found a different driver there which I installed. (link)

But this was not the end of getting it working, as it turns out you have to activate it under the "normal" System Preferences panel

I had to reset a AirPort Express router today - and it took me a while to find out how to do this, so for everyone else, here is a short summary of the 3 ways to reset it:

Soft Reset

With the AirPort Express plugged into the mains, launch the Airport Admin utility. Click the TCP/IP tab and choose Using DHCP from the Configure pop-up menu. Press and hold the device's reset button for 1 second. The light will flash yellow and you'll have five minutes to make changes before the AirPort Express reverts to its previously saved configuration.

Hard Reset

With the AirPort Express plugged into the mains, press and hold the device's reset button for 10 seconds. A green light will flash for a bit and then the device will reset itself -- a process that takes about 45 seconds. Once reset, you can configure it with the AirPort Admin Utility.

Factory Default

Unplug the AirPort Express from the mains and press and hold the reset button. While still holding down the reset button, plug the device into a mains socket Hold down the reset button until you see the light flash green four times. Let go of the button and the device will reset itself. Wait the requisite 45 seconds and configure it with the AirPort Admin Utility.
