After a 36 hour "outage" eAccelerator is now back on the server again - I had a problem with the website yesterday, and ad to revert to a old version of the Apache configuration file, which meant we were back to php4 and no eAccelerator for a period of time.

So all should be a bit faster.

There has been a powercut in out area...

Panorama was one of the first databases ever available for the Mac, and quite a sensation it was as well.

I bought a copy a few years ago for a very specific purpose - speed. Panorama stores all data in RAM, and only writes it back to disk when needed, leading to extremely fast database access. This is not too much of a problem for normal databases today - as modern Mac's (and PC's - it's cross platform) have large amounts of memory available.

The main problem was that Panorama was single user, although for a number of years they tied up with a Canadian software company supplying a SQL based database, which Panorama could use as a back end, even though each client downloaded the whole database to it's own RAM, leading to very light load on the backend database.

This server has had 2 outages today

- One where the Internet link was down for a coupe of hours after the thunder and lightning we have had.

- One for a update of the operating system.

We've just had lightning strikes in the area - this took out the electricity supply, and all the databases are currently being rebuilt on the server, plus all the diskarrays...
