How NetNewsWire 2.1 Reads Feeds
Hm! I had no idea that NetNewsWire had changed the way it read feeds - and that I not longer downloaded the feeds directly from the sites I had subscribed to. I have now turned off NewsGator syncing, as I'd like to let the sites I subscribe to know that I am reading their feeds...
How NetNewsWire 2.1 Reads Feeds:
On inessential.com I write about how NetNewsWire 2.1 reads feeds. The short answer: if you use NewsGator syncing, it downloads feeds from NewsGator. If you don’t use syncing, it downloads feeds from the original sources, just like always. You choose.

My favourite RSS/feed reader NetNewsWire was released for the iPhone in the first rush or releases on the AppStore, and was a big disappointment for me, as it proved to be practically impossible to use with the number of feeds I have (a few hundred).
So I was happy to find the following update and explanation on the authors blog:
NetNewsWire for iPhone progress
I’ve been working like crazy on updates to NetNewsWire for iPhone — but, unfortunately, updates aren’t being pushed to the App Store yet. I don’t know why, though I imagine it’s just that things are crazy in the early days.
I don’t know when updates will go out — wish I did.
In the meantime, here’s what I’ve been doing, and here’s the plan:
I use NetNewsWire every day on my laptop to read hundreds of RSS feeds, and could not do this without it. It's therefore great to see a cut-down version of it for the iPhone/iPod touch, and as a bonus it syncs with my laptop version to flag unread/read stories.
Life on the commuter train is getting more bearable!
Awesome day! NetNewsWire 1.0 for iPhone is available via the App Store. (It’s featured, even.)
I’ve been checking out some other apps — so far I like Remote, Twitterrific, and Exposure. (There are plenty more apps to come, I’m sure. I know of some apps that aren’t listed yet that I’m eager to see.)
So much fun. Of course, I’ve already got 1.0.1 in the pipeline, and I’m working on 1.0.2. But for now I’m still checking out the App Store.
I have to say that I am really, really happy to say that NetNewsWire 1.07 for the iPhone/iPd Touch works very well! What a improvement!
I was so happy last night when NetNewsWire 1.0.7 appeared on the App Store. I was actually out with some local Mac/iPhone developers, and folks were downloading it right away, as we sat at the table. Fun for me. ;)
There is still plenty of work to do, of course — but here are the changes in 1.0.7 (since 1.0):
- Fixed several crashing bugs.
- Performance is much improved.
- Memory use is much improved, and some memory leaks have been fixed.
Ok - so I've used NetNewsWire 3 for something like 24 hours now, and according to the information this is the new stuff :
NetNewsWire 3.0 now available:
he NetNewsWire 3.0 beta is now over. That's right, RSS junkies, NNW 3.0 is now publicly available. I've been using NetNewsWire 3.0 since Macworld 2007, and it has really come together in the last few months. There are lots of new features, including:
Growl support
Spotlight integration
Twitterific support
A New UI
Performance enhancement (this sucker screams on Intel Macs)
Improved Tabbed browsing
Microformat support
And my favourites are
- Growl support. I really, really like this, quick, unobtrusive and so on. Growl is one of those things that really makes using the Mac such a pleasure.
- Speed. Yes - that always helps!
And most of all - it just works very well!
Hm! I use NetNewsWire every day for all my RSS reading - and it syncs perfectly with NewsGator (their online service), but it was not until today that I discovered that they provide a iPhone specific version:
Nice post from Peter Rukavina: “Let me briefly sing the praises of the combination of NetNewsWire, my longtime RSS newsreader for the Mac, and NewsGator Mobile for the iPhone, a web-based application to which NetNewsWire automagically syncs.” He notes how clipping something using the iPhone reader causes it to appear in NetNewsWire.
