As this story point out 1Passwword (which we have bought a family license for) includes phishing protection that works with Safari.

Another good way to protect yourself is to use an up-to-date browser. Firefox includes protection against known phishing sites, and warns you about them before letting you proceed. Safari, currently, does not, but 1Password does, and it works seamlessly with Safari. Installing one of these options is especially important for parents and grandparents that may not be as familiar with these attacks as their kids. Lastly, there's a great overview at macphishingprotection.com, which notes, "Phishers win even if you make only one mistake." Truer words never spoken. [From Beefing up your Phishing net]

We are running a old G4 Mac Mini as our main server - running all our email, fileserving and web serving.

I am looking (if my finance dept allows me) to migrate to a new Mac Mini Intel - and I found this document at the Apple support site :

Upgrading and migrating to OsX 10.5 server.

This may come in helpful for others as well.

For a small family server we do seem to get a lot of spam (and emails) as can be seen by this graph for the last 24 hours - and Saturday to Sunday at that.

And the Spam's caught in this graph are the ones that slip through the initial filtering!

A very interesting little product - a tiny board consisting of a microcontroller and a RGB LED - and a communications bus:

Have you wanted an LED that can fade from deep red to bright purple? Flash like a police light? Turn on with the subtle fade of an incandescent bulb? Flicker like a candle? That's BlinkM.
We've attached an ultra bright wide-angle RGB LED to a microcontroller. Using BlinkM Sequencer, our software that fuses a color picker with a drum machine, you program BlinkM to be any color, and blink and fade in virtually any pattern.
When you've programmed your BlinkM, you unplug it and pop it into your project. Apply 5 volts, and it does its thing, whether that's glowing your favorite pinkish purple, or pulse like an old neon light. All for under $15.

I am getting started with the Arduino microcontroller - and I found this on how to control it using PHP under OsX!

plushie message framework
arduino takes on the internet

Jonah M. Model [web]
Updated: April 24th, 2007

PMF is a communication system to transform Internet events into hardware signals. It sends data to DIY wireless toys for real-time feedback, using the Arduino board. Blogs and instant messages can now easily trigger lights and motion.

This is a PHP4 class written by Jonah Model and Rebecca Stern. It works with OSX's built-in PHP (although other platforms may apply) and can be extended for custom use. This is not a ready-to-go solution but provides a tested model which you can build on to develop advanced wireless toys. A special thanks to kellan of MagpieRSS, the RSS parser which we integrate, and to Adium.

But again - these will not all work for the current versions of varnish...

The Sunday Times has been my favourite sunday newspaper for many, many years, and recently one of the first parts I open is their "ingear" section.

But today it had (at the very least) 2 very dubious stories :

- The first was on page 3 under the heading "BIGGADGET" where it strangely states "One full month after American Customers got their hands on the 3G iPhone.....for its UK launch on Friday"

Ehhh...???? A minimal amount of checking should result in the journalist blushing with shame. the iPhone world "premiere" is on Friday. So far it has not been release anywhere...

- The second story "Waiting for the Internet meltdown" is getting a bit long in the tooth. This story has been doing its rounds in the media for at least 10 years, and still the Internet has not melted....

NB!!! - I found out the hard way that this does not work in the released versions of Varnishd - so I can only assume this is a new setting for versions that are in the pipeline....

-----------------------

One more useful setting for optimal Varnish performance:

VCL Setting
Enable grace period (varnish serves stale (but cacheable) objects while retriving object from backend)

in vcl_recv:

set req.grace = 30s;
in vcl_fetch:

set obj.grace = 30s;

I bought a jar of "Hillboy" at our local farmstore yesterday, and used on my BBQ spare-ribs and prawns last night.

Really good - but not as strong as they indicate on their website (which I do not mind).

Recommended.

The background story is also interesting!
