In a attempt to speed up things

I’ve installed the open-source reverse proxy cache Varnish on a spare Mac in front of our webserver to see if it will speed up some of the sites we’ve got running.

Varnish – Trac:

Welcome to the Varnish project

Varnish is a state-of-the-art, high-performance HTTP accelerator. Varnish is targeted primarily at the FreeBSD 6 and Linux 2.6 platforms, and will take full advantage of the virtual memory system and advanced I/O features offered by these operating systems.

The worlds largest Monkfish (?)

From northern Norway – and yes it’s quite tasty!

Mike is a genius

I found this nugget on Mike’s blog:

observations with solaris scheduling:

One quite straight-forward thing – which i didn’t really think about until I was playing with multiple zones and the FSS – was that you can actually have 0 shares allocated – which just means you get all the spare cycles. If you have 5 zones, all of which running FSS (and why wouldn’t you be), all configured like the following:-

ZoneID zoneName Shares 0 Global Zone 50 1 prod 50 2 preprod 25 3 test 0 4 dev 10

Pretty good for when you do want to make sure that any non-production zones should never impact production (well aside from memory and network impact).

Mike – thank you!!!!!

ZFS in Leopard!?

This story seems to confirm that ZFS support will indeed be present in Leopard?

ZFS *is* in Leopard–Rejoice!:

ZFS is in, ZFS is out… OK, so now we know that ZFS file system support is in Mac OS X Leopard. The read/write support was just seeded to developers according to reports online and no one but complete nerds will notice unless Apple makes it the default file system. The WWDC build of Leopard still has journaled HFS+ as the default file system.

Facebook is growing on me

I must admit that FaceBook is growing on me – I had a hard time seeing the attraction originally, but when my 70-odd year old uncle suddenly showed up it got more interesting, so now I’m getting to be a addict (-;

Feel free to link to me!
